| What is
the difference between an organic lawn and a chemical lawn? |
|
The difference can be likened
to bodybuilding in that you can take one of two routes in developing
a perfectly sculpted body. You can achieve your results naturally
by eating a proper diet and exercising regularly or you can simply
inject your body with steroids.
Clearly the chemical approach
will yield almost instant results with less effort, but your
body could be sustaining lasting damage that can lead to other
serious problems down the road.
The natural approach may take
longer to achieve but you will end up with a more resilient and
cleaner end result that is a source of both pride and good health.
A healthy organic lawn requires
less frequent watering, can better resist disease and drought,
and will naturally eliminate most weeds on its own; however a
natural lawn will always have some weeds. Organic weed control
and a strong, healthy lawn will go far but because weeds are
really no more than misplaced plants and grasses, it's impossible
to naturally eliminate all of them.

| Why should
I have an organic lawn? |
|
Chemical fertilizers and pest/weed
controls are often detrimental to the environment and may cause
long lasting problems to people and animals. But when it comes
to gaining a fully self-sustaining lawn, the effects are just
as damaging. Here's why:
- Chemical fertilizers, even slow-release
fertilizers, generally release too much material into the ground
in too short of a time. The result is a very shallow grass root
systems causing far less resilient turf that requires much more
frequent watering (daily during hot summer months).
- Most chemical pest and weed
control products do a great job at controlling harmful insects
and weeds, but they also kill off almost all beneficial organisms
in your lawn as well. The result is a 'dead' soil that has no
way to sustain your lawn's life on its own. Because of this,
you will become 100% dependant on chemical products to maintain
your lawn.

| I haven't done ANYTHING to my lawn except
mow it, how come it isn't naturally beautiful? |
|
Unfortunately, the effects of
time and progress have taken over and require us as humans to
make up for the changes we've made to the environment. Over thousands
of years, nature has created perfect soil for us to grow things
in. Soil is not dirt. It is the naturally occurring top few inches
of the earth where almost all life resides that is beneficial
to growing plants. However, when your house was being built,
a contractor probably came in and either removed that soil, or
filled in over it with dirt. Dirt is dead ground, barely capable
of sustaining life. In fact, unless a competent landscaper or
a conscientious builder was hired to properly landscape your
yard, chances are you're growing your lawn in dirt.
There are two ways to fix this:
One way is to introduce loam (clean living soil) into your existing
yard and start over- something that is both very expensive and
far more work than it's worth. The other is to turn the dirt
into soil by gradually adding organic matter and naturally occurring
organism's that will give life to the dirt.
Our job is to turn your dirt
into a life sustaining soil and keep manmade elements like road
salt and acid rain from turning it back into dirt by killing
off all that is important in it. Typically it takes three to
five years to fully convert a lawn from chemical dependency to
organic sustainability. The point at which your soil is at its
healthiest.

| What can
Merrimack Valley Lawn Service do for me? |
|
First off, I will work with you.
I generally will not give and initial estimate and consultation
without you being present because there are many things that
we both will need to know before starting. I will need to know
your mowing and watering habits and about the problems you have
had with your lawn. I will explain to you how your maintenance
habits will change with a natural lawn- in most cases making
them easier.
There is no 'one size fits all'
when creating a natural lawn and it is often more than simply
scheduling out 5 treatments of fertilizer and being done. The
options all depend on where your lawn and soil are in their development
and this will be discussed during the initial visit.

| How will
my maintenance habits change? |
You
will find that once your lawn has begun developing deeper and
stronger roots, you will be watering your lawn far less frequently,
if at all. A healthy lawn only needs watering every 7-10 days
and usually the New England weather will take care of this on
its own. The difference is you would be watering deeply and evenly
only for a few short weeks in the summer to support the deeper
root system your organic lawn has developed. You will also want
to mow your lawn high (3.5-4"). A putting green lawn may
look great, but it is virtually impossible for a homeowner to
maintain even with the use of chemicals and is simply too dense
a surface to enjoy playing on and using as a lawn.

| Ive
heard that if I use organic fertilizers, my neighborhood will
smell like a barnyard. Is this true? |
This
is only true if the materials used come from a barnyard. At Merrimack
Valley Lawn Service we only use the highest quality materials.
We never use straight manure fertilizer. Our fertilizers are
a blend of mineral, sea life, and composted plant life and have
a pleasant natural smell rather than an offensive odor. Your
neighbors will not hate you for choosing us.

| How much
will all of this cost me? |
Most
lawns require far more care in the first two or three seasons
to properly develop a good base, therefore instead of paying
high application charges year after year like you would with
most chemical applicators, our prices will decline. Once your
lawn is healthy, strong, and free from chemicals, you will find
that our routine maintenance is relatively inexpensive and less
frequent and because you will be watering your lawn far less
frequently, your water bill will be positively affected as well.

| Is all
of this really worth it? |
|
The answer depends on how concerned
you are about the health and well being of your family and our
environment. There are many reasons why a 'back-to-basics' approach
has become more and more popular in every aspect of our lives.
Toxins, chemicals, and quick-fix methods have become far more
prevalent in today's society than ever before even when there
are many natural methods for dealing without health and environmental
concerns.
We use only the highest quality
natural ingredients in our products. Our organic fertilizers
are not like the products found at your local home improvement
store or even your local garden center.
We do not have a one-size-fits-all
approach to lawn care because each lawn is in a different stage
of becoming totally chemical free and each requires different
types of attention. Our programs are designed to be customized
throughout the season to best suit the needs of your lawn and
soil.
From one season to the next you
will continue to see improvements and after a few seasons, you
will have a lawn that is beautiful, healthy, and most importantly
self-sustaining. There is a certain level of pride that comes
from maintaining a beautiful and yet totally natural lawn and
you'll be happy you chose to keep both your lawn and our environment
green.
